July 29th 2014 Lineup – 9 Trucks

Bibigo Q
Asian bowls/tacos
*I had their beef bowl, $10. The beef was tasty and tender enough, but not very exciting or interesting. It needed more umph. The amount was not great for the price. Their Korean burger ($8) is much better.  It’s actually knife cut beef with Korean BBQ sauce. Super delicious.
SL comments: Perfectly seasoned BBQ beef, good portion size. 7/8 out of 10
Yelp: ★★★★  Good flavors, not exceptional.
Menu: beef/pork/chicken bowls ($10), Kimchi or ko tacos, burger ($8),chicken salad

fiveten burger - v
Burgers & sandwiches
*My daughters got the regular burgers, with just ketchup & medium rare. They both found it to be too peppery, I’m not sure if it was the bun.
SL comments: A couple of people mentioned their grass fed burger isn’t worth it. Two kids LOVED the burgers, they didn’t think they were too spicy. Their father commented that they had the best tater tots ever. Their cheesesteak and pastrami sandwiches got lower points from two other diners, who they were good but too small for the price. Garlic fries were not garlicky, but good. A friend had their grilled cheese sandwich twice. First time, she loved it, second time it seemed tired and not very flavorful. Her daughter loved the fries, however.
Yelp: ★★★★ Good: burgers, garlic fries Bad: long, long waits
Menu: cheeseburgers ($7-10), sandwiches ($8): sausage, chicken, steak
Veggie option: grilled cheese sandwich ($6)

Grab & Go Kabob
Middle Eastern
*I had their beef kebab wrap. It was pretty good, the chunks of beef were a bit large and unwieldy, and there were too many veggies, also in too big chunks. Second time I had their Koobideh (seasoned ground beef), which  wasn’t that great. It was pretty dry and the meat was salty but lacked flavor. I also didn’t like the very large chunks of lettuce.  My daughter had the joojeh (chicken), which she didn’t like at all. Too dry. I don’t think I’ll try this truck again.
Yelp: ★★★★ The good: great sauce, large kebabs. The bad: The beef was a little underseasoned.
Menu: Wraps $6-$9 tri-tip/chicken/ground beef/ground chicken/turkey patties

Licensed 2Grill
Int’l inspired tacos & sandwiches
*Marga: I’ve gotten their “Cheat Day Fries” ($8) many times. They are loaded with cheese, pico de gallo, avocado sauce, firecracking sauce, chicharron and your choice of steak, pork or pork belly. I always have them with the pork belly and without the cherry peppers. They are PERFECT. Great combination of flavors. Definitely high calorie, but if you’re in the mood for loaded fries, these are them! Large portion. They don’t travel well, however, so eat them while hot. I also had them once with carne asada and the flavors didn’t mesh as well. I had one of their tacos which was good, but not mind blowing.  The people at the truck give you great customer service.
Yelp: ★★★½  The good: truffle fries, good flavors – The Bad: long wait times, small portions
Menu: beef sandwiches ($10), fries w/ topping/meat ($8), truffle fries ($4), arugula salad ($5), fancy tacos ($3-4)

My Shrimp Shack
Shrimp
*Mika & her friend had the breaded shrimp (coconut?) and they both loved it. It was a small portion for $5, but a great snack for them.  Friends had the shrimp over noodles and over rice. Shrimp was the same, they liked it, but preferred it with the rice, as it soaked the sauce better.
Yelp: ★★★★ The Good: delicious shrimp & sauces – The Bad: the non-shrimp dishes

Rice Rockit

Hawaiian/Filipino
* I got the chicken adobo fries ($8). I think the fries would have worked better if they had been thinner. These were medium-cut and a bit too oily-tasting. The chicken adobo was shredded and the sweet sauce was good. Portion was large. Enjoyed it, but wouldn’t order again.
Yelp: ★★★½ The Good: pretty much everything.  The bad: too much rice to meat ratio in burritos & dishes, side rice & slaw not seasoned
Menu: beef loco moco, longaniza sliders, chicken adobo fries, garlic chicken, chicken adobo/longaniza/loco moco tacos & burritos + specials

Roderick’s BBQ
BBQ
Yelp: ★★★★ The Good: BBQ beans, fried cat fish, maybe brisket The Bad: Potato salad, pulled pork, canned green beans
Menu: Brisket sandwich ($9), Pulled Pork sandwich, Fried Fish

Tacos de los Altos
Mexican
*Cheese quesadilla ($5): overpriced and underwhelming. Churro ($2) Costco quality for twice the price.  My oldest daughter LOVES their shrimp burrito, however, and my youngest liked the bean & cheese burrito once, but disliked their cheese/rice/bean burrito, and would not finish it. It was way too expensive at $6.

♥ Truckin Sweet
Ice cream & cupcakes (single scoop $3/$5 double)
*My daughter got the passion fruit, guava and orange sorbet. It was a bit too sweet but had intense flavor. You don’t want more than a scoop of this one, though.  I had the olalieberry honey and it was quite nice. On a different visit, my daughter had the cupcake but was not impressed.
Yelp: ★★★★½ The good: all of it

Past Trucks

3-3-3 - V
Mexican/Korean/Indian Burritos & Tacos
*Mika got the Chicken Tikka masala bowl. It didn’t taste exactly like the dish you get in restaurants, but it was very good. Expensive at $9, but it was a good size portion.
Yelp: 4 stars. The Good: strong flavors. The bad: small portions, specially the tacos.
Menu: Mexican: carne asada, chipotle chicken, pork in chili verde, Korean: short rib, spicy BBQ chicken, mushroom tofu, Indian: lamb curry, chicken tikka, paneer tikka. Burritos, $9. Tacos, 1 each within a cuisine, $7.25, 3 a la carte ones, 4 a la carte $10. Apparently also bowls and bento boxes.
Veggie option: Korean mushroom tofu and paneer tikka

3 Brother’s Kitchen – V
Vietnamese Street Food
* We had their ribeye over curly fries ($12). Mike liked it a lot, but I felt there was no harmony between the beef cubes, the peppers and the fries. All good individually (though the steak could have used more salt), but nothing brought them together
Yelp: ★★★★1/2 The good: dry hu tieu noodles, chicken katzu curry, Chicken Banh Mi The bad: soggy rice
Menu: wet noodles w/ shrimp/pork belly & other toppings ($8), chicken or shrimp banh mi ($7.25-$9.25), chicken katzu curry over rice or fries ($9-10.25), ribeye over rice or fries ($10-12), Caesar salad ($4.25)
Veggie option: house salad, vegetarian banh mi and vegetarian rice bowl

SL comments: Perfectly seasoned BBQ beef, good portion size. 7/8 out of 10
Yelp: ★★★★  Good flavors, not exceptional.
Menu: beef/pork/chicken bowls ($10), Kimchi or ko tacos, burger ($8),chicken salad

Vietnamese
Yelp: 3 1/2 stars. The Good: pulled pork banh mi slider, fish tempura bahn mi, garlic noodles. The Bad: Inconsistent
Menu: Bahn Mi ($7) : pulled pork, tempura tilapia, chicken. Tacos ($3 or 3 for $8): shaken beef, spicy chicken, tempura tilapia, pulled pork + Specials.

♥ Borinquen Soul
Puerto Rican
*I’ve had their much lauded chicken in in onion sauce ($10 in a plate w/ chicken & rice & bananas) and was very disappointed. There were a few chunks of dried chicken, not very flavorful at all. The rice tasted just like Mexican rice. The fried bananas, OTOH, are delicious.
Yelp: ★★★★½ The Good: beef alcapurria, chicken in onion sauce  The Bad: cash only, pastel not too flavorful
Menu: pastel ($5), empanadilla ($3), chicken in onion sauce ($5), beef alcapurria ($3), rice & pigeon peas ($4). Combos including rice/peas & bananas, $10-$12.
Dessert Option: Fried Bananas ($3)

Chutney Mary’s
Indian-inspired Hosh Posh
Yelp: ★★★ The Good: One person had a good vegan plate, someone else likes the variety The Bad: slow service, not very good food, not warm enough, messy, lacking in flavor

Cluck It Up
Chicken wings
Yelp: 4 stars The Good: honey siracha wings strong favorite, garlic parmesan wings, fries and lumpia bites get strong reviews. The Bad: a couple of people didn’t find the garlic parmesan wings flavorful, some thought it wasn’t a good value.
Menu: Wings, 6 for $8 or 9 for $12, flavors vary, lumpia bites, 10 for $5, fries $3-$6, corn on the cob, $1.

fiveten burger - v

Got Curry?V
Indian wraps
* San Leandran comment: got the chicken tikka massala wrap, thought it was very tasty and a good portion, rates it 7/10.
Yelp: 4 1/2 stars (6 reviews). The good: food. The bad: very limited menu
Menu: Your choice of chicken tikka massala or paneer in tacos (3 for $7), wrap ($9), sandwich ($9) or bowl ($8)
Veggie option: paneer

Grillaz Gone WildV
Hot sandwiches
*Their Flying Pig was delicious, even reheated the next day. Their BBQ bacon sandwich, OTOH, was swimming in too-sweet BBQ sauce, so you could not taste anything else. Skip it. Mike: good BBQ cheesesteak, sauce a bit overwhelming but complex. Mika (11 yo): LOVED plain cheesesteak that night. I thought it was average. HUGE sandwiches with tons of meat means leftovers! Unfortunately, they didn’t reheat well the next day, Mika hated it. Thick french fries, too hot but good.
San Leandran comments: Good philly w/ white sauce. Very good loaded french fries.
Yelp: ★★★★ The good: good flavor – The Bad: $9 for sandwiches + extra for fries
Menu: Several options of cheeseteaks, chicken sandwiches, burgers, other hot sandwiches
Veggie option: 3 sandwiches with a combination of portobello mushrooms, veggies & cheeses

♥ Hongry Kong Truck - V
Hong Kong street food
*Marga: I tried the egg, coconut and pecan tarts. The coconut was actually pretty good. The pecan was OK, less sweet than usual, which I liked. The egg ones, however, were pretty tasteless. More sugar would have helped.
San Leandran comments: pork with curry sauce was satisfying but not extraordinary.
Yelp: ★★★★  The good:  milk tea, tarts  The bad: curry fish balls, skewers
Menu: your choice of meat, fish or veggies with your choice of sauce (tangy tomato, peppery oyster, cheesy cream, curry), rice or spaghetti ($9), street snacks
Veggie option: veggie main dish (see above)

Dessert Option: mini-tarts $1.25-$2.25

Kinder’s BBQ
BBQ
*I had their ribs and they were OK. The portion was generous, but the ribs were tough and did not really have the consistency of smoked ribs. They had a wonderful smokey aroma, however. The BBQ sauce is pretty good.
Yelp: ★★★  The good: ribs, tri-tip, fries – The Bad: side salad, mediocre potato salad
Menu: Ribs, Sandwiches: ball tip, chicken, hot-links, Salads: Chicken Caesar, BBQ Chicken

Lexie’s Frozen Custard
Soft-served ice cream
I wasn’t impressed by their peanut butter cup sundae. At $5.50 it was pretty expensive, the chocolate frozen custard had a nice texture but it was very much one-dimensional, it had one tone of chocolate flavor and that was that.  I liked the mini-peanut butter cups, but the sundae needed more peanut butter sauce.
Yelp: ★★★★ The good: banana caramel, summer berry, banana sundae  The bad: cookie sandwiches ($3.50)

Madd Mex Cantina - v

My Shrimp Shack
Shrimp
*Mika & her friend had the breaded shrimp (coconut?) and they both loved it. It was a small portion for $5, but a great snack for them.  Friends had the shrimp over noodles and over rice. Shrimp was the same, they liked it, but preferred it with the rice, as it soaked the sauce better.
Yelp: ★★★★ The Good: delicious shrimp & sauces – The Bad: the non-shrimp dishes

Out Of The Cave – v
Int’l inspired meats/Paleo
Menu: Plates ($10, includes a side): jambalaya, turkey meatballs, carnitas, tri-tip, Korean short ribs, chicken curry. Burrito bowls (lentils, black beans, cheese, salsa): tri-tip or carnitas ($8), ground turkey or chicken curry ($7)
Veggie option: butternut squash bisque ($7)

Pizza PimpsV
Pizza
*Both my oldest daughter and I enjoyed their 4-cheese slice ($4). It was a good size slice and a good value.  The slice was firm so it could be eaten with one hand while standing and talking without it getting all over the place.  I liked the flavor, it was adult though not exceptionally delicious.  My youngest didn’t want to eat it because one of the cheeses was cream cheese, but that was the best part.
Yelp: 4 stars
Menu: Pizza slices for $4, 20″ pie for $25. Usually on the menu: 4 cheese & pepperoni. Other types vary, past:
Figgy piggy (pulled pork, figs, bbq sauce), East meets West (chicken, broccoli, carrots, asian & bbq sauce, siracha), pepperoni. Bacon mac & cheese ($7-9)
Veggie option: 4 Play cheese pizza,

Savourie Streets – V
Hot sandwiches
*I had their meatball hoagie and while it was expensive ($10), it was all you’d expect this type of sandwich to be. Great balance between meatballs/cheese & bread. The bread was so soft I could eat the sandwich with a fork (and I kind of had to, to avoid having it fall all over me). Mike had the pulled pork, which he thought was very good. In a different visit, I had their marsala steak & mushroom melt sandwich ($12). This was tasty, but the cheese felt out of place, and the beef needed an extra pinch of salt It was dripping with liquid marinade/sauce, however, and it was extremely difficult to eat. It was a good size sandwich. My husband got the BLT ($9), with pork belly, and he was disappointed that the pork wasn’t more flavorful. I thought it was good, but a bit small of a sandwich for the price. On another visit, my daughter had their mac & cheese ($5).  She really liked it, but it was a tiny, tiny portion. Very much a side.
Yelp: ★★★★ from 2 reviews. The Good: Mac & Cheese.
Menu: sandwiches: French dip, Meatball Hoagie, Italian Sausage, Trip-tip, pork belly, chicken Caesar. Salad: salmon siracha
Veggie option: Mac & cheese, toasted caprese sandwich
Dessert options: bread pudding, cookies

Sip of the World
Drinks
Yelp: ★★★★ (2 reviews) The Good: mango halo halo, service
Menu: Halo Halo ($7.50) frozen bubble tea, sea salted foam, other cold drinks. ($5)

Siva Food Truck
Indian
Comments from SL diners: “Good Food”
Yelp: ;★★½ The good: good flavors. The Bad: small portions and high prices, tax & extras added. Not they add a $2.50 if you use a debit card!

Sliders Truck
Sliders / American
* I tried their beef and lamb sliders. They were both very small for the price (~$5) and not particularly noteworthy flavorwise and somewhat dry (probably because how small the patties were). Long wait and wouldn’t bother ordering again.
Yelp: ★★★★1/2 (3 reviews) The Good:   chicken and lamb sliders  The Bad: garlic parmesan fries, buttermilk fried chicken (small, no flavor)
Menu: grassfed beef sliders, buttermilk fried chicken, pork confit,  pork belly, diesel turkey, meatballs, 2 kind of fries

Smothered - V
Smothered Fries
* Had their fries with ground beef & peppers. I wasn’t impressed. The fries are pretty thick, which means they don’t really combine well with the toppings. The topping itself wasn’t that great tasting either. The cheat day fries at Licensed to Grill are much better.
Yelp: ★★★★ The Good: most fries combinations The Bad: clam chowder fries, Spanish chorizo
Menu: regular or sweet potato fries smothered with: beef gravy & cheese curds (poutine); mushrooms, asparagus & cheddar; ground beef, sausage, bell peppers & mushrooms; variety of sausages & cheeses; popcorn chicken & gravy; garlic & cheddar; ($7-8 single, $11-12 double)
Veggie option: veggie fries

Streatery VV
Peasant food
*Marga: Their lemon ricotta donuts are good, but not extraordinary. Mike had their brisket sandwich, he enjoyed it but I found it too sweet.
San Leandran Comment: Very good oxtail with grits, 7/10. Would be an 8 if the oxtails were hotter. Grits need some seasoning.
Yelp: ★★★★ The good: lemon ricotta donuts, pretty much everything else including vegan corn crepes.
Menu: oxtail & grits, brisket sandwich, rice & pork patties
Vegan option: corn crepes, potato & quinoa salad, roasted chicken
Dessert option: lemon ricotta dumplings

Street Dogsv
Hotdogs
*Mike got the chili dog and thought it was awesome
Yelp: 3 1/2 stars The good: relatively good hot dogs. The bad: very expensive
Menu: Chicago style dogs, chili dogs, other sausages: Polish, jalapeno/cheddar, chicken/sundried tomato/Mozzarella, chicken/apple/Havarti
Veggie option: tomato bisque soup

Tacos de los Altos
Mexican
*Cheese quesadilla ($5): overpriced and underwhelming. Churro ($2) Costco quality for twice the price.  My oldest daughter LOVES their shrimp burrito, however, and my youngest liked the bean & cheese burrito once, but disliked their cheese/rice/bean burrito, and would not finish it. It was way too expensive at $6.

The Melt Bus – New
Melted Cheese sandwiches
*I had their Italian job with tomato and short rib ($7). It didn’t win me over. The short rib was OK, but the flavor didn’t work with the cheese. There wasn’t a huge amount of cheese, however. The bread was very greasy.
Yelp: 2 1/2 stars. The Good:  egg-in-a-hole sandwich The Bad: problems if order online, cheap ingredients, expensive for what it is,
Menu: Basic melted cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, fontina & provolone, swiss0 $5 with added ingredients: bacon + $1, short rib, chicken, portobello mushroom, ham or turkey, +$2 each. Special melted sandwiches, $7 to $10. Breakfast egg & cheese sandwiches, $4. Small cups of soup & salads, $4, milkshake, $4, chocolate-marshmallow met, $3.25

The Rib Whip
*I had their rib tips and they were tough and dry. The BBQ sauce had an overwhelming flavor of some aromatic spice (cinnamon? cloves?) that made it altogether unpleasant. I would not order again. The buttermilk pie had gotten raved reviews on Yelp, but it just tasted like any other custard pie. You can get a much better slice at Nation’s for much less.
Midewestern BBQ
Yelp:★★★½ The good: Buttermilk cream pie ($5). The bad: rude service, small servings, tri-tip dry and not flavorful, inconsistent ribs/pull pork

The Waffle Roost
Chicken and Waffles
*Mike had their chicken waffle sandwich. He’d never had chicken & waffles before, and he liked the combination. I thought it was a bit weird, and I’m not sure if I’d order it. I had the waffle with chocolate chips & toasted almonds. I liked it well enough, but felt it was quite overpiced. I wouldn’t order it again. My 12 yo didn’t like it at all. The younger one had the plain waffle with powdered sugar and cream. Again, good, but sort of small for the price.
Yelp: 4 1/2 stars. The good: chicken & waffles, authentic collard greens, maple syrup. The bad: chocolate chip waffles too sweet, so order without powdered sugar
Menu: chicken & waffles in different combinations & with different condiments, $8-10; sides: mac & cheese, sweet potato fries, collard greens, $2.50; waffles with: powdered sugar ($3.50), dark chocolate chips & toasted almonds, caramel & sea salt or caramel & bacon ($4.50), whipped cream extra 50c
Veggie option: Waffle with egg & melted cheese ($4.50)

♥ Truckin Sweet
Ice cream & cupcakes (single scoop $3/$5 double)
*My daughter got the passion fruit, guava and orange sorbet. It was a bit too sweet but had intense flavor. You don’t want more than a scoop of this one, though.  I had the olalieberry honey and it was quite nice. On a different visit, my daughter had the cupcake but was not impressed.
Yelp: ★★★★½ The good: all of it

Twister Truck
Mexican
*A couple of San Leandrans rave about the twister cones. My husband had their burrito and didn’t like it. His main issue was that there was no integration between the cold and hot elements of the burrito.
Yelp: ★★★ The good: twister cone (crisp tortilla, good meat/avocado sauce) The bad: nothing stands out, very mixed reviews on flavors
Menu: burritos, quesadillas, tortas, tacos

Yummi BBQ

Yelp: ★★★½  The good: chicken wings, shrimp chips The bad: other items not exciting, small portions for price
