City Hall

San Leandro resident Cynthia Chandler posted this open letter today to Mayor Stephen Cassidy‘s Facebook page.   Ms Chandler is a professor of law at Golden Gate University. As a survivor of violence and as a resident concerned with public safety and ensuring our city uses its resources wisely, I am concerned that Chief Spagnoli is engaging in hyperbole and misinformation to promote her personal agenda. I am writing to ask you to take action by ensuring police chiefs are not permitted to craft city ordinances (advise, but not craft). Last night at the District 5 & 6 community meeting, Chief [Continue Reading]

Hint to Politicians: You don't show respect to Spanish-speakers by butchering our language.

Hint to anyone trying to court Spanish-speaking customers, businesses or voters: if you address us in Spanish, make sure you do it correctly.  It can be quaint when a non-Spanish speaker memorizes a short message in Spanish, and we’ll be forgiving, thought it’s overdone and a bit boring.  But if you are going to produce Spanish-language materials, get a professional Spanish-language copywriter and proofreader/editor.  Or at least, hire someone who has had formal education in the language.  Spanish is a beautiful language with rather strict grammatical and spelling rules, you can’t just wing proper writing.   When your Spanish-language materials [Continue Reading]

Alameda will NOT Raise Chinese Flag on October 1st.

San Leandro City Council member Benny Lee argued that San Leandro should raise the flag of the People’s Republic of China at City Hall because other cities like “Alameda do it”. It turns out that that is not true. Tibetan activists all over the world have been writing to Alameda Mayor Marie Gilmore asking that they don’t fly the PRC flag on October 1st.  One activist got the following response from Assistant City Manager Alexander Nguyen: Please be informed that the City of Alameda, California, has not, does not, and will not raise a foreign national flag on City Hall’s [Continue Reading]

Council to Vote to Raise People's Republic of China flag in San Leandro

San Leandro Actually Considering Honoring Repressive Chinese Government If City Council member Benny Lee has his way, on October 1st San Leandro will awaken under the red banner of the People’s Republic of China.  October 1st, “National Day”, will be the 64th anniversary of Mao Zedong‘s proclamation that the communists had won the civil war and that China was now a communist republic.   No word yet on whether Lee will propose to adorn City Hall with pictures of Mao as well. Item 10.B on the September 16th agenda is pretty straightforward: 10.B. 13-458 Consideration of Request to Raise the Flag [Continue Reading]

Chief of Police Sandra Spagnoli Gets Caught Lying to City Council

But will the Council and City Manager let her get away with it? Tuesday night, San Leandro Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli was caught lying to the San Leandro City Council several times. Two lies are so blatant, that there can be now wiggle room around them. 1 – She told the City Council that the SLPD only has one police car equipped with license plate scanners mounted on them.  But as Mike Katz-Lacabe, my husband pointed out, it has 3.  He’s taken pictures of them, in case there are any questions. 2- She told the Council that license plate scanners [Continue Reading]
