Mike Katz-Lacabe on SLPD's use of Licence Plate Cameras - and on Stingrays

My husband, Mike Katz-Lacabe, is a human rights and privacy advocate. Several years ago, he discovered that the SLPD was secretly using license plate cameras to photograph both cars and the areas around them – and were keeping those records indefinitely.  Since then, police departments have refused to share this data from citizens, but if you drive a car in the Bay Area, you can assume that the police has access to hundreds of photos of your car, you and the area around it. Mike’s activities have been covered by the news media. Here, in reverse chronological order, are stories [Continue Reading]

Former Council Member Uses "N" word; Cutter writes him off, Cox does not

Update 2: Campaign finance reports show that Pauline Cutter returned Judge Landis’  contribution.  Deborah Cox did not.  Landis died in November 2015. Update: Deborah Cox has given in to public pressure, this afternoon she spoke with Brian Copeland and said she’d return the contribution. San Leandro has a long and tortuous history of racial segregation and discrimination.  The city was almost exclusively white well into the 1990s and stories of police cars guarding the border with Oakland still linger in the memory of many African Americans. Writer and comedian Brian Copeland, who moved to San Leandro as a young child, [Continue Reading]

Thursday Dec. 18: Celebrate Mike with Free Speech in San Leandro!

Update For an event organized in 3 days, the Free Speech Day was very successful. The day started with Mike speaking about his work as a human rights activist and then as a privacy rights researcher/activist. Then SLHS students spoke about their concerns and experiences. One girl asked question of whether Martin Luther King’s dream had come true (it has not), others mentioned their disappointment at how City and School authorities are not transparent about issues that concern students, such as the COPS grant.  One student brought up the fact that they see many more military recruiters than college recruiters [Continue Reading]

The race for City Council District 1 features four very different candidates with very diverse backgrounds.  Mike Katz-Lacabe, my husband, is an IT security professional, a twice elected member of the School Board and a human rights & privacy rights activist.   David Anderson is a retired sheet metal worker who moved to San Leandro a few years ago.  Ken Pon is a self-employed accountant, very active in the Downtown Business Association and other civic organizations.  Deborah Cox is a home maker and prodigious fundraiser, who has chaired several community organizations, mostly related to education.  They will be elected through [Continue Reading]

Shelia Young Answers on What She Can Do for Oro Loma Sanitary District

The Oro Loma Sanitary District includes parts of San Leandro – which parts, I’m not actually sure.  They have contracted with Waste Management for garbage collection, so if you live in San Leandro and get your bill from WM, you are in the Oro Loma district.  Oro Loma has an elected board of directors, and this year five candidates, including two incumbents, are vying for three seats.  I have sent all candidates a 3-question questionnaire based on the fact that I assume others, like me, know very little about sanitary districts. Here are the answers and candidate statement from Shelia Young. [Continue Reading]
