The San Leandro City Council eliminated full minutes of Council meetings several years ago.  To make up for this, and keep San Leandrans informed of what their Council is up to, Mike Katz-Lacabe tweets from the meetings. I’ve started compiling his tweets on this blog.  You can follow Mike’s tweets at @slbytes. My comments on his tweets are on italics. At last night’s meeting, Mike was – as it’s often the case – the only candidate for City Council that was present. Public Comments Al Frates condemns Vice Mayor Benny Lee for advocating for California Waste Solutions Oakland garbage contract. Gating Heron [Continue Reading]

Dan Siegel is the Right Candidate to Endorse for Oakland Mayor

Teachers, Nurses Endorse Siegel I want to congratulate the Oakland Education Association and the California Nurses Association for endorsing Dan Siegel for Mayor of Oakland. I have heard now from many people that they love what Dan Siegel stands for, but he can’t win. That, however, can be a self-fulfilling prophesy. If we don’t support the candidates who hold our values we will never see real change. By catering to our perception of what voters want to hear, we promote demagogy instead of real democracy. We do not give ourselves a chance. I thank the teachers and the nurses for [Continue Reading]

We Are Ferguson

The New York Times has a story, titled “Around St. Louis, a Circle of Rage” about how police harassment and political ostracism of African-Americans has given fuel to the protests we see in Ferguson.  You can substitute “Oakland” or “San Francisco” for St. Louis and get the same story. People of color – mostly, but not exclusively, African-American – are tired of having their children shot and being the object of police harassment. When you add to these issues, the fact that the middle class is being decimated, that jobs and opportunities for youth are disappearing and that America is no [Continue Reading]

San Leandro Moves to Ban Medical Marijuana in Multi-Family Housing

Ban extends to e-cigarettes, Public not given notice UPDATE: After I sounded the alarm on this issue, Mayor Cassidy took the item off the agenda for the March 17th meeting.  He claims that the prohibition of smoking/vaping marijuana in multi-family homes was included by mistake.  He says a revised ordinance will come back for a vote in April.  The revised ordinance, however, is also injurious to medical marijuana patients, as they will not be able to take their medicine safely when they’re away from their homes. — The San Leandro City Council sneaked a very controversial issue into its agenda [Continue Reading]

CA Legislature Wants to Make it Easier for Government & Identity Thieves to Track You

Our state officials seem to be working as hard as they can to help the NSA track the movement of US citizens as much as possible.  Their latest stunt? Enhanced drivers’ licenses. These are drivers licenses or ID cards that have a radio chip that transmit information about you. The purported reason for this is to make it easier to cross borders.  Getting a passport, however, is no more hassle than getting one of these and provides you with much more privacy: as you don’t usually carry them around. Once you have these types of ID, anyone who has the [Continue Reading]
