Leland Yee: Meet Derek Cressman. He's Running Against You

I got a call from State Senator Leland Yee’s campaign. He’s running for Secretary of State and seeking the Democratic endorsement along with Senator Alex Padilla and Derek Cressman. Yee’s campaign told me that Speaker John Perez* had asked Democrats to not endorse on that race, so as to not create unnecessary divisions within the party. You’d think that if Perez didn’t want divisions he’d withdraw from the race for Controller against the better qualified Betty Yee. Anyway, Yee wants me to vote “no endorsement”.  I bet he does – he’s probably afraid the endorsement will go to Padilla. I [Continue Reading]

First They Stole, Now They Lie: Why Neither Mary Hayashi nor Stewart Chen Should be in Office

I am a liberal,  of the bleeding heart variety.  I think if you’ve committed a crime – a real one, with an actual victim –  and you’ve done your time, the slate should be wiped clean.  You should be able to vote, take the Bar, get a job.  But I also think that if you want to regain the public trust, you need to take responsibility for your actions.  If you don’t, then you have no business running for public office. Take disgraced Assemblywoman and State Senate candidate Mary Hayashi.  During her last term in the Assembly, Hayashi went to Neiman [Continue Reading]

A letter to the City of Oakland: Please Take our Police Chief, Sandra Spagnoli

Dear City of Oakland: I know you are looking for a new Police Chief.  Please take ours!  SLPD Chief Sandra Spagnoli doesn’t work cheap  and crime may have gone up under her, but she speaks well and smiles enough.  Surely appearances do count.  She fooled us, she can fool your residents as well. Spagnoli is a hard worker (sure, she has about 90 days off a year, in addition to weekends, but that’s standard for public executives) and has an unmitigated commitment to social cleansing. She doesn’t discriminate between gays, the mentally ill, blacks, liberals or even gun-advocates – in her book everyone [Continue Reading]

Why is the City of San Leandro Hiding Documents that Mention Me?

It’s Confirmed: I’m the Subject of a Police Investigation Update: Today, Nov. 18th, I received the response to the California Public Records request I filed on my name.  The turned in some records, “forgot” others, and specifically declined to turn in others.  Here are the reasons they gave for not turning in those records: 1)      The records reflect the analysis or conclusions of an investigating officer and are exempt under California Government Code section 6254(f). 2)      The records contain attorney-client communications, “the disclosure of which is exempted or prohibited pursuant to federal or state law… relating to privilege” under California [Continue Reading]

Petty or just pitiful? Stephen Cassidy bans opponent (moi) from following him on Twitter.

Mayor Stephen Cassidy seems to be getting very nervous. He stopped me – and only me – from being able to post comments to his notes on his Mayoral Facebook page after I started writing about his lack of integrity and his repeated violations of open government laws.  He seems to be getting pettier and more fearful, though.  His latest stunt is to ban me from following his official Mayor account on twitter. A twitter ban doesn’t stop you from reading someone’s tweets or replying to them – it just stops you from re-tweeting them.  So it would seem that [Continue Reading]
