Should Demos endorse John Perez or Betty Yee?

Today I got a call from Assembly speaker John Pérez’ campaign. He’s running for State Controller and wants my vote for the Democratic endorsement. My plan, at this point, is to vote to endorse Betty Yee. Yee is currently a member of the State Board of Equalization. I have heard her speak and she’s definitely a budget wonk. She’s had a number of budget-related jobs in the past, and she strikes me as someone who is careful and by the book. Still, I don’t know her very well. Speaker Perez, OTOH, strikes me mostly as a political animal for what should [Continue Reading]

Central Committee Terms Are Now 4 years instead of 2.

I was elected to serve in the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee for 2 years, but chances are that my colleagues and I will stay for four instead. The reason, as usual, is money.  County Committee elections have historically been held during June primary elections on even years.  As long as the Registrars of voters were issuing partisan ballots for State offices, it wasn’t a big deal to also have the Central Committees included.  But now that we have open primaries, the only partisan ballot is that for the Presidential primaries.  Registrars figured they could save millions of dollars and hundreds [Continue Reading]

Alameda Demos Pass Resolution in Favor of Alternatives to Military Acion in Syria

The following resolution was unanimously passed by members of the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee on Sep. 4, 2013 RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF REPRESENTATIVE BARBARA LEE AND MIKE HONDA’S EFFORTS TO SEEK ALTERNATIVES TO ARMED INTERVENTION IN SYRIA Whereas, the United States has accused the government of Syria of using chemical weapons against its civilian population and is, as a consequence, proposing armed intervertion in the Syrian civil war; and Whereas, it is unclear what the effect or duration of such intervention would be, opening the door to a long term military involvement; and Whereas, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, along with [Continue Reading]

I agree with the 193 members of the U.S. House of Representatives who are urging the President to seek Congressional approval for any military action with respect to Syria. Congress should be shown definitive proof concerning the Syrian government’s role in the use of chemical weapons. The memory of weapons of mass destructions that failed to materialize in Iraq – which continues to undergo turmoil long after our departure – is far too fresh in many of our minds to demand anything less. Congress must debate the wisdom of engaging in yet another military adventure in the Middle East after [Continue Reading]

California Democratic Party Condemns Unlawful Use of Drones

At last weekend’s convention, the California Democratic Party issued a resolution calling for an end to extrajudicial executions and the unlawful use of drones.  I wholeheartedly hope that Democratic politicians, both in California and other states, will put it into effect. I thank resolution co-author California Democratic Party Chair John Burton as well as Resolutions Committee co-Chair and former California Senator Martha Escutia for their commitment to have this resolution reach the floor of the Convention, where it unanimously passed.  I also thank the other co-authors of the resolution, in particular Karen Bernal and Peter Leinau, for all the work they [Continue Reading]
