Suspect of Stabbing Caught, But It's Not Enough.

Yesterday, a young woman was stabbed to death by her boyfriend near downtown San Leandro.  The stabbing was witnessed by a friend and the suspect was quickly caught.  Of course, that doesn’t do the victim any good.  Nor did the quick arrest of another man who also stabbed his 15-yo girlfriend to death earlier this year. I congratulate the Police for their quick work, but I can’t but wonder if these murders demonstrate a much larger problem of domestic abuse that we are not seeing.  And behind that, a greater problem of men who are growing up without the coping [Continue Reading]

Wanna have fun? Tell me how and win 2 tickets to "Salmon Fishing in Yemen"

Share your best ideas for entertainment venues in San Leandro. There is no doubt that San Leandro leaves much to be desired when it comes to entertainment.  We have a multiplex showing new releases, the quaint Bal Theater showing old movies and hosting special events, plays at the Conservatory Theater and comedy nights at The Englander.  And that’s pretty much it, unless you count high school sports & shows and the occasional political fundraiser.  No wonder San Leandro cops spend so much time busting people for selling dope – there isn’t much for young people to do in town other [Continue Reading]

Help Keep City Government Transparent!

What is the San Leandro city government up to?   Often times I wonder myself, but without a local press that digs into its deeds (and misdeeds), we generally have no idea. I think we should change that!  If the press won’t keep an eye on local government, let’s do it ourselves! What I propose is simple: let’s have members of the community volunteer to attend key public meetings and update the rest of the San Leandro community as to what was discussed at those meetings.  It sounds boring, but it might actually be pretty significant.  For example, at the [Continue Reading]

How do you spell "lobster"? Dig into one and help a 3rd grader find out.

The San Leandro Rotary Club has been a long time supporter of our local high school students granting college scholarships and scholarships to RYLA Leadership Camp.  The “Lobsters for Literacy” Lobster Feed sustains these scholarships as well as funds the now 6th annual distribution of dictionaries to all 3rd grade students in the San Leandro School District. This year, the Lobsters for Literacy event will be held on Friday, October 7, 2011 at the Boys & Girls Club (401 Marina Blvd).  Tickets are running out!  So we ask that anyone in San Leandro and the surrounding area who is interested [Continue Reading]

The Bal Theater Gets Permit to Show Live Entertainment

But did it need it? I have been following the controversy over The Bal Theater showing live events for quite some time, but it wasn’t until last night that I finally understood the positions of both sides: the City and The Bal’s owner Dan Dillman.  Neither side – Dillman or the City – has done a particularly good job of laying the issues on the table.  At yesterday’s Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) meeting, Community Development Director Luke Sims finally explained the city’s legal rationale for trying to stop Dillman from offering live entertainment.  I have to say, on its [Continue Reading]
